STAR House #3: The Wynn House
With advancements in medical treatments and greater knowledge regarding preventative care, most individuals are enjoying longer lifespans. The STAR residents are no exception. The combination of a primary disability with the declines of aging placed our residents in a special category of vulnerability. The need greatly exceeded the availability of placements in housing options with not only the increased care required by our aging individuals, but also opportunities for personal growth, community involvement, and interaction with peers. There are few programs designed to deal exclusively with the aging developmentally/intellectually disabled population and the increased care required by these individuals. It is with these issues in mind, STAR decided to pursue the development of its third home to provide this type of specialized care for those seniors within the population currently being served. On November 15, 2012, STAR closed escrow on its third property. A complete renovation of this property began in the fall of 2013 and opened for operation in the fall of 2016. STAR has been lucky to forge an incredible partnership with the Carl E Wynn Foundation. The Foundation’s support has been instrumental in realizing, extending and advancing STAR’s mission, programs and services. The Wynn Foundation had designated STAR as the recipient of funds that were restricted to be used in the development of our third home. Due to the incredible generosity of the Foundation towards this goal, the STAR Board of Directors designated the third home as STAR 3/The Carl E. Wynn House.
